my sons appendix burst prior to his arriving at the hospital and he was left in er for 10 hours before having surgery. ended up in the hospital over a month and had to have part of his colon removed during a exploratory surgery. over 1000 pages of medical records show he was on pain meds like dolodid for 3 weeks and then on methadone after that. his doctor was very resistant and rude during this time and failed to do any of his 90 day after care obligation and also is no longer a doctor at the hospital.we had a lawyer who dumped us right after he filed the suit but right before a court date. i have appeared once in court as a temporary stand in attorney but on october 20, 2008 we have another court date in which i must have council present to represent us or the case will be closed for good as this will be the end of my 60 day extension that was granted to us by the judge during our last court hearing. this is a few of many details about this story and im sure that if given a chance the records will speak for themselves in our defense proving that we are right and that the doctor as well as the er are guilty of not giving my son the prompt and thorough care he needed while in their facility.

I worked a night shift as a CNA, we had a colon cancer patient who had the most extreme "cancer sores" on his perineum area. He was on massive doses of morphine and other pain medications but still every movement of his body put him in agony. He had refused to be turned, I just propped his heels off the bed,(covered in sheep skin). The previous shift and his current nurse suggested that we let him sleep and that we didn't need to turn him, just keep him comfortable and not disturb him unless necessary. I checked on him every few hours and if he was awake I asked if he would like to change positions and offered him water. He refused to be turned and he was coherent enough to understand. At the end of the shift I checked and cleaned his colostomy and catheter and noticed his soaker pad was soiled from his oozzing sores. He repeatedly said he would not allow me to turn him or touch him unless he was given more pain medication. His morphine pump was not enough to controll his pain completely. The nurses were in report.I notified them as soon as they were out of report about the situaton and they said they would get anesthesia to dose him and then do his dressing change and clean him up.My shift was up and the new CNA was there so I left and went home. I found out that the nurse was upset with me and wrote me up. I have been a CNA for 5years and pride myself on giving the best care to every patient and have never ever been written up or repremanded for patient care. How else should I have handled the situation?
