Can I receive compensation for being a caregiver to my spouse in Texas?
Hi Y'all! asked:
I am not able to get a job of any type due to the fact that I must care for my husband at least 18 hours a day due to illness. This illness is chronic. Is there anyway here in Texas that I may receive some sort of compensation for this "job" that I perform 7 days a week, At least 18 hours a day. 365 days a year!
My husband is retired and we receive his social security check. But that alone is not enough for 2 persons to live on! I cant leave him alone to go a work at a job. And even if I could, we could not afford a sitter to come in while I work. The sitter would probably make more an hour than I could! I've done eBay and all, but dont have anything else to sell off!
Is there any way to receive compensation for being a caregiver to your spouse in Texas?
Or any ideas of some REAL jobs that dont cost to start that I could do from my home while I care for him?
My husband has Ankylosing Spondylitis along with a colostomy due to colon cancer in advanced stage.
Thank y'all but I've tried all the DHS stuff. We receive $10 a month FStamps with a $1074 social sec. check only. And no, my husband was'nt a vet. Just an ol' log truck driver here in Texas!

I do not know about tax laws or anything of that nature, but you should definitely qualify for some sort of assistance from the state, whether it be welfare, food stamps, utility assistance, anything that might help. Call the DHS and see what you will be able to do. They will be your best bet. If you are already receiving SS checks for your husband, you might not be able to claim him as a dependent unless he is truly incapable of caring for himself, which would have to be investigated by the state. Now if it is SSI that might be a different story. Make a few calls and see what you can find. Good luck.
My wife fell 6 years ago and is disabled so I know how you feel, she will be 81 soon and I am pushing 83, do everything from buying the food to cooking it and all the other things, the good part is that she can take care of her personal needs.
The only suggestion I can make is if your husband was a veteran you might be able to get some help there but the process is very slow, I have been trying since Feb. and nothing as yet. Fortunately my income is enough to live on without the unnecessary things, like eating out. Check with your local VA .

Contact your local Department of social services. They do have programs like that where a spouse or parent gets paid for caring for their ailing loved one. Also, should you not get that they also have what’s called respite care where you would get a caregiver for so many hours per week to come in and take care of your husband while you go out and work or do relaxing things. There are many areas of help it’s just a lot of calling around and finding whats available, don’t get discouraged helps out there.
